Avoid saying “Say ____”

Use short simple phrases

Speak slowly and deliberately, clearly articulating each sound and syllable

Repeat key words frequently

Get down to the child’s eye level when you are speaking to them so they can see your mouth

Use an animated voice with lots of inflection to make words sound more interesting

Simplify words to make them easier to say

Avoid quizzing the child, i.e. “What’s that?”

Don’t withhold items if he doesn’t say the desired word

Allow the child to “steal” language by modeling the words you want him to say

Prolong vowel sounds and enunciate consonants

Praise any attempt at talking

Use is more important than accuracy
