Ways to Promote Language Development

  • Talk to your child about everything you do
  • Read with your child everyday and point out pictures in the book
  • Listen to your child and respond to their attempts to communicate with you
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to your child
  • Use real names for objects, not “baby talk”
  • When your child uses a word, repeat it back in a sentence
  • When your child uses incomplete or incorrect grammar, repeat it back the correct way without putting down their attempt to communicate
  • Expand your child’s vocabulary by introducing them to new words and explaining their meaning – Don’t always keep things simple
  • Use new and more difficult sentence forms as your child’s language develops
  • Ask them questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer
