Ways to Promote Language Development
- Talk to your child about everything you do
- Read with your child everyday and point out pictures in the book
- Listen to your child and respond to their attempts to communicate with you
- Respond promptly and appropriately to your child
- Use real names for objects, not “baby talk”
- When your child uses a word, repeat it back in a sentence
- When your child uses incomplete or incorrect grammar, repeat it back the correct way without putting down their attempt to communicate
- Expand your child’s vocabulary by introducing them to new words and explaining their meaning – Don’t always keep things simple
- Use new and more difficult sentence forms as your child’s language develops
- Ask them questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer
